Good Fats Bad Fats- Know your Fats

Are you confused between Good fats and bad fats and want to understand what the differences are between them and which ones are good for you? Then read on!

Unsaturated Fats are generally thought to be healthier than saturated fats. They are found in many vegetables-particularly olives, avocados, nuts and soya, Meats generally contain more saturated than unsaturated fat.

Trans fats are  mainly found in processed foods. They are are produced when vegetable oils are solidified to make "hydrogenated" and "partially hydrogenated" vegetable fats. As the name suggests, this process involves in pumping hydrogen gas through the oil.

Popular in the preparation of fast food, hydrogenated fats are melt in the mouth solid, rather than liquid like vegetable oils, so they change the texture of processed foods. They also increase the shelf life, eg. if a chocolate bar was not pumped with hydrogenated fat the shelf life would be typically be 30 days rather than 18months. However, there is growing evidence than the increase consumption of trans fats in our diets can lead to heart disease
