Mum's last-ditch fundraising bid to beat brain cancer

Nic with Mae and Finn
Nic is 38 and the mother of  two beautiful children, Mae 9, and Finn 6.  In May last year, Nic was diagnosed with an inoperable brain stem tumour and since then has received radiotherapy at The Christie She has been  given a 10% chance that this will keep it at bay for a while.... Nic is doing amazingly well to be where she is today.

After lots of research by both Nic and her husband Ceri, they have found a clinic in Houston Texas, that can treat very rare forms of cancers. Its a very different approach to treatment and the doctor is pretty controversial and never makes any claims that he cures everybody, but its the only place in the world that offers any glimmer of hope. Faced with such odds, anybody would try to do what they can to live a normal life, As the treatment can only be administered in America it’s expensive, but only comparative to what you would have to pay for treatment here if we didn’t have the NHS. Nic, Ceri and her family need to raise enough money for 2 years treatment (as a minimum) which will be about £200,000.

Nic just wants to be around to see her children grow up. It’s that simple. At present they are just short of £90,000 since starting in January this year. An incredible effort from everybody involved and they are humbled and so grateful for all the help they have received.

A website has been set up to provide more information and links through to donating etc www.nicsroadtorecovery.co.uk and twitter @nicsrecovery and a facebook page under groups nics road to recovery.

If you can provide a donation (however small, this would be hugely appreciated

SO WHATS IT GOT TO DO WITH ME AND WHY AM I OFFERING TO HELP- PLEASE READ ON, NO GIMMICKS!!

Well it's quite simple, I have two lovely children and a wife  and up to know I am healthy. I was indirectly approached to help raise some money by holding a Charity BootCamp in November and to be honest its the least I can do by offering 60 minutes of my time, if it will help raise money and help a family in need then yes I am more than happy to do so.

The Charity BootCamp is to be held on the 10th November, 10am at  Newall Green High School  South Manchester, the cost is £10 per person and is open to all fitness levels. Prior to attending you must register your attendance on the Please Contact Me Box to ensure we can accommodate all attendees

Please please send this on to as many people you know in  Manchester it really would be great to help and the more people we have the more money we can raise , if you cant attend but you would like to help, then please feel free to  provide a donation at www.nicsroadtorecovery.co.uk
Thanks for your time,  Sean

Bespoke Life Fitness Update: 10 Small Steps To Improve Your Health: Summary: Every year people make health related resolutions, such as lose weight, stop smoking and join a gym but not many people ...

10 Small Steps To Improve Your Health

Summary:

Every year people make health related resolutions, such as lose weight, stop smoking and join a gym but not many people will succeed, Why? This is because people set the bar way to high and suddenly fall on the first hurdle and beat themselves up for failing.

I was once one of those people who wanted immediate results and if I did not get them I would soon kick my toys out of the pram and suddenly I was back to square one. If you set yourself up to fail you will fail... Its as simple as that no BS its true.

Small steps to improve your health are far more easier to manage, results may take a little longer but you are likely to continue with them throughout the rest of your life. Here are my top ten tips, If you need any help drop me a comment and I will get back to you.

Here are 10 to try:

  1. Stop gaining weight. Even if you gain just a pound or two every year, the extra weight adds up quickly.

Easier said than done right? Wrong... Think about something you have everyday and you know is fattening,  replace it with some fruit and then treat yourself at the end of the week with that something
2.  Walk more...

Cutdown on the use of transport, use a pedometer to count your daily steps; then add 2,000, the equivalent of one extra mile. Keep adding steps, 1,000 to 2,000 each month or so, until you take 10,000 steps on most days. If you cant get hold of a pedometer why not think about the bus you take to work, why set off 10-15mins earlier and walk to the next Bus stop and do this every week. If you go to work in a car the same principles apply, park the car further away from the office and walk in.

3. Eat breakfast.

Breakfast eaters tend to weigh less and have better diets overall. For a filling and nutrition-packed breakfast, Try Organic rolled oats, 4 chopped apricots, handful of sultanas, slice one small banana and sprinkle with cinnamon and a small drizzle of honey (Organic) replace the milk with coconut milk

4. Have at least one green salad every day.

Eating a salad (with low-fat or fat-free dressing) is filling and may help you eat less during the meal. It also counts toward your five daily portions of vegetables and fruits.

5. Trim the fat.

Fat has a lot of calories, and calories count. Purchase lean meats, eat poultry without the skin, switch to lower-fat cheeses, use a nonstick pan with only a dab of oil or butter.

6. Consider calcium in your diet great for building strong bones

Try coconut milk

8. Downsize.

The smaller the bag, bottle or bowl, the less you will eat.

9. Lose just 5 to 10 percent of your current weight.

The health benefits are huge-lower blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides.

10. Keep a food diary of  what your eating.

Write down what you eat over the next couple of days and look for problem spots. Often, just writing things down can help you eat less.

10 Diet Rules You Can Break

There are actually diet rules out there that are meant to be broken? Yes, recently many dated diet guidelines and myths are up for speculation. YouĂve probably heard all these silly rules before, but experts weigh-in on the worthiness of these supposed truths - most of which won't help you lose weight or make dieting any easier.

10 Food Rules You Can Ignore:

1. Eating at night will pile on the pounds.

The total calories you consume over a 24-hour period or over a week is what causes you to gain weight, and when you eat these calories doesn't matter, however eating late may cause indigestion and interfere with sleep

2. It's best to eat at the same times every day.

Eat when you're hungry, not when the clock says it's time to eat.

3. Dieting with a friend always makes weight loss easier.

Common goals may pay off but weight loss is a personal journey, think about why you doing it and have that in your mind when reaching for that Pork Pie!!

4. Dietary fat keeps you feeling full longer, so you'll eat less.

Fat does take longer to digest, but it will not help you control your appetite. Foods likely to fight off hunger the longest are protein foods, followed by carbohydrates, then fats.

5. When you blow your diet, you might as well wait until the next day to get back on track.

Wrong!!! Nothing could be farther from the truth- always try to get right back on track with your next meal.

6. Refusing food at a party or when visiting is rude.

Turning down food that you know will blow your diet is socially acceptable.

7. Skipping a meal every now and then will help you lose weight.

Skipping a meal means you will be so hungry at the next meal and you are likely to overeat. This can also  help lead to a slowdown of your metabolism which will increase your weight

8. Bread is fattening, nuts are fattening, pasta is fattening.

Whole-wheat bread/pasta is a great source of nutrients, and it won't make you gain weight more than any other food with the same number of calories. Try to go for Gluten Free where possible

9. All calories are equal.

This is somewhat true, however; you'll get more nutrients from a 100-calorie apple than from a 100-calorie portion of white bread. Choose healthier items if you are losing weight, or controlling your hunger.

10. If you don't clean your plate, you're wasting food.

If you just don't feel right leaving the table until you've cleaned your plate, underestimate your hunger and put less food on your plate to begin with, or you may overeat.

Start by putting vegetables on your plate first or salads and finish with small portions of lean meat or fish.

Don't believe everything you hear! Much of it is just superstition. Now you can tell your friends the real truth. In the end, nutrition experts say, many of the food and dieting rules we hold dear are meant to be broken - without guilt!

The answer is simple – you cannot exercise your way out of a bad diet. 70% of your success is eating the right things and avoiding the wrong things, so you must get this right.
Lately I have been asking my clients and followers what their biggest struggle and frustration is with regards to losing weight and achieving results. They all said exactly the same thing..”What do I eat ?”
As a qualified nutritional coach it comes really easily to me to write   daily, weekly or monthly menus, but for some of you it may not come quite as naturally so Bespoke Life have come up with the answer to all of your nutrition problems.
We have created a 30 day meal planner cookbook which contains 90 eat-clean Fat Loss recipes and includes 30 breakfasts, 30 Lunches and 30 dinners- all in one cookbook where you can pick’n’mix!
Sample Evening Meal
All of the recipes are super tasty and you will never get bored as you can eat something different for every meal. This means a month of healthy, delicious meals and because ALL of the meals in the cookbook are “eat-clean”  and so by following it for 30 days you will see a reduction in body  fat, bloatedness and fatigue .
All you have to do with our cookbook is choose 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch and 1 Dinner and Voila! Simple!

Free Fitness Classes for People who want to Quit Smoking

Altrincham Local Health & Fitness Business to offer FREE fitness classes for Quitters

Smokers across England are being urged to quit for a month in October as part of a government campaign.

Research has shown that people who manage to stop smoking for that length of time are more likely not to start again.

“Stoptober” takes place for 28 days from 1 October. The campaign will involve TV and radio advertising, a daily messaging service and roadshows across the country.

Sean Salinger, Personal Trainer and co-owner of local fitness company Bespoke Life says “Exercise can help smokers to quit, and quitting smoking has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of developing Cardiovascular disease, and that must be the goal of all smokers. Studies have shown that people who exercise are 55% more likely to quit, and 43% less likely to relapse into smoking too”

Sean adds “regular physical activity strengthens your efforts to quit smoking- with or without nicotine replacement therapies. It relieves stress that might trigger your cravings, boosts your mood and keeps your mind off cigarettes. In the meantime, you’ll reap the other benefits such as losing weight, toning your muscles and boosting your cardiovascular health”

Bespoke life are offering locals trying to kick the habit a FREE fitness class of either Bootcamp, Boxercise or Zumba during October. To register simply visit www.bespokelife.co.uk and enter “Stoptober” in the contact form to claim your free session, or contact Sean on 07590-919881
